Famine, Affluence, and Morality Essay

Whilst reading Singers ideas of a global village in which a person is obligated to aid someone in need regardless of proximity, has moral bearing, but also portrays a rather one sided view of what we consider as â€Å"helping† other starving nations in need. For example, approximately 1 in 8 Americans live below the poverty line, in saying this; the question comes to mind, why we should be concerned with poverty in other nations without first worrying about our own problems. When presented with Singers views concerning helping other third world nations and the guilty spirit he implies through his article, it is imperative that the reader not get so wrapped up into what’s best for the global community and start thinking what’s best for each sovereign nation. I do not fully disagree with the points presented by Peter Signer, but, I feel that industrialized nations such as America are facing their own problems that must be resolved first before we can start worrying about other nations. For example, American families are being forced to pay interest on a debt that was created out of thin air, by this I am referring to the current economic institution known as the Federal Reserve which has been a â€Å"thorn† in the side of every taxpaying American, it was the federal reserve act of 1913, which would force the American people into Inflation, Deflation, never ending debt, slavery, and bondage through money created out of thin air and sold to the treasury, at interest, for its bonds, which are guaranteed by the American taxpayer. According to the Human poverty index, the United States ranked 16th, which is one rank below the United Kingdom (Thoren & Warner, pg. 23). I feel these problems should be solved first, before we concern ourselves with what is happening with other countries around the world. Whilst arguing what I feel will be of the most benefit to the country in which I live, I feel that once these problems are solved, it would be wise to help other nations, not just because of the business relationships that could develop through such processes, but also because of the global image such feats would produce. For example, during World War two, America developed a weapon that’s strength was unknown until its time, the Atomic Bomb. The Atomic Bomb was dropped on Hiroshima in 1945, and in an effort to reduce tension between the United States and those notions within the region of Hiroshima, the United States helped rebuild Hiroshima. The point in all this being that by helping other nations the United States can acquire new allies and develop lasting business relationships. Furthermore, Peter Singer claims that although there is a common distinction between duty and supererogation, this does not justify such a distinction. I feel that it is morally right to contribute to those nations which are less fortunate than we are, but this view of morality must be in accordance with a moral code the ordinary man can relate to. For instance, the ordinary man, being asked to do things he/she considers unnecessary, could result in a general breakdown of compliance amongst the citizens of that particular country. As stated earlier, there must be a balance between the amount of aid we permit other countries to have, and the amount of aid we give ourselves. How can one nation help another, if that nation is suffering from the same conditions? It is imperative to the survival of America that its economic system is sound, and its industry provides enough decent paying jobs for its citizens. Considering Americas current situation, I strongly feel that certain major problems, such as unemployment and the country’s economic system should be the first priority, then helping other countries in need would be the second most important priority. Singer’s article contains many parallels with the pervious viewpoints discussed, on page six he state â€Å"We ought to be preventing as much suffering as we can without sacrificing something else of comparable value (Singer, pg 5).† This statement contains much wisdom. Singers view point considering those citizens who have accumulated extraordinary amounts of wealth, and the need for them to give there surplus wealth to the less fortunate closely resembles the theology of many religious institutions. While although I believe that those citizens that are more fortunate than others should be more swayed to donate an amount greater than those individuals who are less fortunate, I do not believe they should be obligated to do so. If those individuals, who worked hard, and accumulated an extraordinary, amount of wealth, were forced to donate more than those who are less fortunate, the system itself would be incredibly flawed. Many people forget that many of those individuals who have accumulated vast amounts of wealth did so through running a successful business, which, in some instances, employs a great number of people. When forcing such individuals to donate more, employee wages could be affected. In conclusion, while I do not agree with every point made by Mr. Peter Singer, I feel that helping developing nations is an essential aspect in developing peaceful relationships amongst nations. Furthermore, it is essential that citizens involved in helping developing countries should not be forced to pay more than they can afford without reducing their standard of living. It is imperative that underdeveloped nations receive the help needed, but also the citizens contributing to those nations donate an amount that can be agreed upon. References Thoren & Warner. The Buch der Natur or the Book of Nature was written by Konrad von Magenburg depicts the cosmos as levels, steps that we have to take to reach heaven in a different way that nobody else sees it.There are so many different opinions on what the stars mean because the view of them has changed over time. So what are the stars are they just there or are they one of the levels we need to reach to enter heaven. According to Konrad Von Magenburg’s illustration of Buch der Natur is a book but he depicts the cosmos as humans on earth being the lowest level, then levels of the stars, finally the top level heaven the goals of all humans. Aristotle believes that â€Å"the earth is the center of the universe, and everything revolves around them† .This idea which is called Aristotle’s Universe was adopted by the medieval church and to challenge this view of the Universe was not merely a scientific issue; it became a theological one as well, and subjected dissenters to the considerable and not always benevolent power of the Church. So making people think that God put the earth at the center of the everything and the church being the peoples connection to God putting all the power into their hands.Ptolemy was different he added to Aristotle’s view of the universe but he calculated and researched to make his own ideas as well. Ptolemy came up with â€Å"that the heavens go in a uniform circular motion and the objects in the heavens are made from perfect material, and cannot change their intrinsic properties†. These ideas togeth er became known as the Ptolemaic Universe. He also wrote about the cosmos in his book called â€Å"Almagest† in a way Ptolemy and Aristotle had the same views and ideas about the heavens its just more scientific advances in Ptolemy's time .Even though today people don't see the cosmos as the heavens or a level to become heavenly beings we still try to discover what the stars hold. The meaning of the stars today really doesn’t mean anything to Christianity or the church. So is Konrad von Magenburg right or wrong are they a level. Is heaven right beyond them and all we have to do is pass certain tests to reach it. But the stars are something that we really want to discover but we as humans no longer think that the heavens lie beyond it.

The environment affects human health in many ways in this short passage I will talk about air pollution and polluted waters. Air pollution is everywhere, and no we do not always see it but it is their harming everyone’s health. Why is air pollution bad for children’s health because it harms their lungs and increases the chances or childhood asthma. Air pollution is harmful to children’s lungs, but adults also. Air pollution has been known to cause a number of respiratory problems. Places with a higher rate of air pollution people tend to be at higher risk of heart problems. The reason why is because of the amount of air pollution that they breather every day is not helpful. Big companies that produce lots of air pollution should try to invest some money into their facility’s, so that there is not as much air pollution formed in the area. If the air pollution is toxic is can eventually higher someone’s rate of developing cancer. This means if you liv e in an area with lots of pollution, and can see the thick pollution clouds in the air chances are there is a higher cancer rate in that area because of the pollution the people are breathing in every day. Something has to be done to stop the amount of air pollution that is forming in some areas because it is severely harmful to people’s health, and the people of the companies producing it make it sound as if it is not harmful at all. The truth is that is does a lot more damage to our health than they are telling us.On to polluted waters it is not as bad as polluted air, but it is there. Polluted water is bad for us and can make us sick when we drink it or swim in it. Low danger symptoms that might occur from it are vomiting, diarrhea, skin rashes, and stomach problems. Do not think these are the only types of occurred symptoms that polluted water can cause because they only become worse. Polluted water can also cause developmental and reproductive problems these problems occur when we drink the polluted water for long lengths to time. Air pollution is not the only thing that causes everyone’s nightmare cancer polluted water also can cause it. The same as air pollution and breathing it we would have to drink lots of polluted water before this occurs. Tap water is normally safe to drink, but it is good to drink filtered tap water because water pollution can still travel through our reservoirs where they filter our tap water at. They pollution is normally very little traces of it in tap water, but on occasion they will be a high amount of pollution were the water company has to let us know of the  problem. The environment we live in can affect human’s health in many more ways than explained. We as humans create most the problems with the environment that we are faced with. Unfortunately I doubt that will change anytime soon, maybe in the far future. The two types of environmental problems I discussed were air and water pollutions and the harm that they do to humans.

Prediction I predict that the single test tube is more exothermic than the test tubes in the huddle. This is because, by huddling, a smaller surface area of the test tubes is exposed to the air. Thus, less heat is given off. Heat can be lost in various ways. However, by huddling the test tubes, heat loss via convection and radiation can be reduced. Examples where huddling is vital for survival occur in nature. As evidence that huddling is a learned response, animals like penguins and seals would die if they were not taught these basic skills. Minimizing Legal Risk- Hence western companies that plan to outsource manufacturing to China should be aware of these legal challenges. One way of preventing these issues is to have a strong network with the locals or to make sure that sensitive technology is not outsourced to China. Cultural Challenges China has evidenced thousands of years of history, culture and traditions. The way Chinese people behave today is the result of its historical transformations, which is very different from the transformations witnessed by western societies. Hence the modern day Chinese culture is very different from the cultures of the west. The cultural aspects of the Chinese are immensely reflected in the business world, for example, A CEO in the western world is normally looked upon as a consensus builder or as an individual who debates and discusses strategies with their employees and then executes the strategy, whereas in China the leader is looked upon as the sole decider and executor of strategies. There is a strict hierarchy in the Chinese business culture, which is very different from the business culture of some of the west countries. So to run a successful wholly owned outsourcing unit in China, the western businessmen need to understand and overcome these cultural chal lenges. Challenges in Scale and Demographics China is a vast country with a massive population, Western businesses are often at awe about China and think that the 1.3 billion people could become a large customer base, but in reality China is a complex market. 850 million people in China live in the impoverished countryside; their life is harsh, uncertain and poor.536 million people live in the urban areas out of which 247 million people are considered middle class and have an expendable income. The middle class earns over $5000 per head over the period of a year, but one must also consider the fact that the Chinese are the largest savers in the world unlike some western countries such as the US where the consumers have massive spending power and a culture that promotes spending. Hence for a western company to succeed they need to understand these Demographic differences. Challenges related to market behaviour The Chinese market is unique in many aspects, many western companies have tried to sell their product as-is in the Chinese market and failed miserably, and these are not some small unknown brands but large mega brands that have been successful for many decades and different markets. To be recognized as a brand in China, one need to market and advertise the Chinese way, marketing and branding in China should carry a strong Chinese Cultural overtone to be successful in the mainland. Successful western companies such as Google and eBay have failed to become market leaders in China. The lesson learnt from the failure of these companies is that they â€Å"did not understand the localization factor† Therefore for the long run, western companies should â€Å"Think Chinese but act western† and sell the right product at the right price to be successful in the Chinese market. Economic instability Trade policy Challenges China is the world’s second largest economy and is among the fastest growing economies of the world. When western companies move to China they have to consider the economic stability of the country and prepare themselves for the various risks due to changes in fiscal policy, monetary policy, trade policy and other macro economic factors. China’s economy is mostly dependent on exports from the manufacturing industry and foreign economists suggest that the Yuan is undervalued by as much as 40%. Hence a Change in the Yuan can impact the profitability of the western business. Due to high economic growth there has been a strong demand for semi and highly skilled labour all over China. The labour costs have steadily increased over the last 5 years and the government has increased the minimum wage level. This will impact operating costs in China and hence a western company planning to operate in China will have to factor in this ri sk. In summary western enterprises need to be aware of macroeconomic risks before they start their operations in China or face the possibility of failure.

Mt First Lovely Dog English Literature Essay My father likes animals very much that he kept them since I was young. He had dogs. At that time, I was too young that I was afraid of them. I was small child and they were big monsters. So I didnt like them. But, my father tried to make me become familiar with them. So he used to gave me chances to touch the little baby dog. He brought the baby to me every night for 5~6 minutes. The Big dog was scared, but the little baby was very cute. However, One day, one accident happened to me. It was about noon. There was nobody but only me in my house because my parents went to work. It was nice day until the BIG my fathers dog appeared. The leash of her was cut! Although I knew that I shouldnt run away in front of dogs, but I was very shocked and frightened that I ran away. Surely she ran after me. But she ran just cause I ran. However I misunderstood she was about to bite me. I was too embarrassed that I fell down. The dog just passed me and disappeared. At that time, I was very shocked that I thought I had got bitten by her. And really there was a scar on my arm! But it was scare which is made by felling down to the ground. I could recognize it a few days ago. After that incident, I hated dog very much until my family moved to here. My father likes mother nature very much that we moved to country side when I was 8 years old. Here is really deep in the mountain that there is a few houses. So it is nice to keep animals. Then my father started to kept dogs again. At first, my father brought a little dog that I loved her. As Yeappi(the dogs name) became bigger and bigger, automatically I dont hate big dogs anymore. Every evenings, my father and me used to walked around with her. She liked run very much. And she was a good mother. When she raised her kids, she totally devoted herself. When she took care of her babies, they were the first important things to her. Guarding her babies was sure thing to her. If her baby excreted dongs, she ate it all to make it clean. And to delete the smell of baby from their enemy. I was moved to saw that. Also if it was very cold day, she dug the hole and moved her baby to there to make them warm. However she was also aggressive like other wild beasts. I loved rabbit that Once I had kept rabbit. When he was a little rabbit, I could had him in my room. But as he grew up, it became hard to. So my father decided to kept him next to Yeappis home. My father and I thought that it is very good idea. But as soon as Yeappi saw my rabbit, she changed wildly. She tried to kill him!! We were shocked and my father saved rabbit very quickly. But it was late. Already one of ears of rabbit was cut. Sadly, my rabbit had gone after 7days. At that time, I hated and blamed Yeappi for long times. But she wasnt aggressive to me that as time goes by I could forget that happening. By the way, My father isnt get along with a guy of neighbor. He is really ignoble. He tried to appeal his anger to not only my family but also Yeappi! He blamed and shouted to Yeappi whenever he passed her. Just because she was barking! Even he spitted to poor Yeappi!!! One night, I couldnt stand it anymore. It was almost midnight. That night, she barked loudly. So he came to Yeappi, threatened her with long stick with shouting. I got angry that I got off with my mom and had a fought with him. I said to him It is not a dog fault but our fault. Then you should visited my family, not dog. And you used to shouted to my dog with very foul words! How would you like somebody blamed you, If you were a dog? Surely you would hate him and bark at him, isnt you? Also Your method is wrong! You could solve this problem with us not dog! And you are very rude! Its almost midnight. Its too late, dont you know? You could visit us next morning! And then, I wanted to fought with him more, but my mom ma de me returned to home. And next morning, he made a trouble. Finally he destroyed Yeappis house! Oh my god. I hate that guy very much. He let off his anger to dog! Yeappi couldnt express her bad emotion except for barking. How could do that such a poor dog! I cant understand him and I dont want to understand him either!! Sadly, my father decided to let Yeappi go. I didnt want to do that, but I thought it is torture to Yeappi. So I agreed with him. Since then, I couldnt contact to her. I am really sorry to her. Therefore no matter how cute an animal looks, I hardly like to stroke, pet and touch. Third reason that I do not like animals is dirt. Of course, family pets are clean but I think that animals that wander the streets are very dirty. They live streets so they are certainly filthy. Animals that wander the streets can not wash their bodies so they have the possibility that they have diseases. Also animals that wander the streets may have diseases that can transmit people. For example, people can be infected with rabies. We have to be careful of it. Because of this, I do not want to go near them. Fourth reason that I do not like animals is noise. Animals are very noisy. Animals make a noisy sound. Typical noisy animals are dog and cat. When dogs bark at a person, it is very noisy. And the sound can frighten a person to death. Furthermore, cats mew. Around the apartment building that I live in now, there are many cats. Every nights, they mew as a group. Cats sound like a baby crying. It is very horrible sound. Last reason that I do not like animals is my experience with animals. When I was young, my grandmother raised a dog. One day, the dog gave birth to two pups. The two puppies were very cute and lovely. Because I was young, I was bold. So I tried to bring the two puppies from their mother with no definite idea. Suddenly the mother dog attacked me to regain her babies. I was greatly surprised and I screamed loud. It was fortunate that I was not hurt but I was very shocked by her sudden action. Also we can easily happen to meet dogs which help a man who is visually handicapped when crossing the street. In addition to these animals, there are various species of animals and our ecosystem consists of them.     However these animals are suffering from humans selfishness. Environmental disruption causes large temperature changes and ecological adaption. As results of them, many animals are threatened with extinction. Besides, indiscriminate poaching has placed many animal species in danger of extinction, too. For example, poachers capture many whales cruelly to commercial exploitation. And some people hunt animals like raccoons, rabbits, tigers or so,  then skin them and made a fur coat in the name of fashion. Crocodile is used for many accessories such as handbags, fashion belts and purses. Even dog meat is very popular and healthy food for some Koreans. Last year, I have watched a documentary called Tears of the Amazon. According to that,  Ã‚  some people in the Amazon also ruthlessly capture unique animals in Amazon and sell them off for a living and it made some species to disappear. We should stop being cruel to animals, because animals are on an equal footing with human being. Human has no right to determine other animals existence. Animals are our friends. We can easily understand it by imaging our selves in animals position. To build this kind of view of world, it is good for us to remind a Indian chiefs letter. In 1850, the Indian chief  wrote letters  to white mans who force Indian to yield possession of their land. How dare you buy and sell sky and land? We think it is very odd. I felt sorry for you. So I brought you to my room secretly. When I petted your fur, you went to sleep peacefully. After you went to sleep, I went to sleep near you, too. Although I was scolded by my parents (my parents doesnt allow to raise dog in the house because I have asthma), I was really happy because you could sleep peacefully. We have become close after the day. Even though we were different species, I felt you understood my feeling. When I was happy, you were glad with me. And when I was sad, you shared my sorrow. When I went my aunts house during Chu-seok, there was a big dog. A dog was kept on a lead. So I tried to go near the dog with my cousin. But I failed because of dogs barking. And there are another experience about dogs. In last summer, I went my friends house to play with her. But there were two dogs, too. And because my friend knew that Im very scared of dogs, she saved me from dogs. So I could enter her home safely. But the problem occurred when I came home. When I came out from her house, like before, she tried to save me from her dogs. But she failed and two dogs surrounded me. And I was too fearful because two dogs reached my legs. In the end, I cried. Like these, Im very scared of dogs. So I hope that Im not scared and I can touch dogs someday. One is The death of Maltese, and the other is The Cat, Eun-bi incident. First, The death of Maltese was that after Maltese dog was born, it breed for ten years, because of his owner for making money. Because the owner forced him to breed, Maltese eventually become ill terribly. And the owner left him alone, Maltese was died in the end. And The Cat, Eun-bi incident was similar the story of Maltese. In one efficiency apartment, a woman in twenties hit her cat severely and throw it outside the window. I was very shocked by reading them. And I also feel terrible after watching them. Frankly speaking, I was very angry that people act that. The owner of Maltese was very selfish and greedy. Also it was wrong act that Eun-bis owner teased the cat. Thinking, it is natural that we should not do such acts. And such conducts are unacceptable. But whats the idea of the such acts and why do that? I saw one comment in article. People are the most important than any others. So what is the problem? This comment makes me angry and I felt ashamed as a person. And it does not make sense. Because animals have the rights and it is not important thing that who is more important. And animals are living things, not our toys. And after seeing two articles, I thought carefully about animals rights. I think that animals have the rights. I read in a book that in Korea, differently other nations, there are some people that kill pets or wild animals mercilessly. Nevertheless these people werent punished or were punished lightly for these acts. So some people have no regard for mistreating animals. Meanwhile I became a second year in middle school. I went to my friend house, that time I saw a animal. This animal was very cute and tiny. This animal seemed like mouse. My friend introduced her pet. This animal is included species of hamster. Since that time, I dreamed about raising hamster all day. So I pressed my parents. But they refused my request. When I went to home after school, I tried to persuade my parents every day. After all my parents permitted my request. My parents suggested some rules. First I raised hamster and cleaned hamster`s fur. Second I did not bother hamster. Final I paid entire cost about hamster. So I had saved pocket money for a few months. And I brought a hamster. I called my pet Pump. Only I saw the Pump that I felt happy. I had trouble to take care of my pet because I raised pet first and I did not understand what my pet wants. One day I did not know that my pet was hurt. A few days later my hamster walked lame. I was surprised and shocked. Right now I took my hamster to animal hospital. Veterinarian said If this hamster not treated, it walk lame hamster`s whole life. I was so sorry. While we spent a year, we had a happy times. One day, when I went to home after school, I had a strange sensation. So I wanted to go home as fast as I could. When I arrived home, I saw the hamster. The hamster was lying on the bottom. I thought that Pump was sleeping. But Pump groaned with pain. I was embarrassed. I did not know that what I have to do. I took my hamster to animal hospital as fast as I could. Veterinarian said Hamster is tiny and weakly animal. So hamster is susceptible to colds. If hamster catch a cold, hamster can die. I am not sure that this hamster treat completely. I received drug and took my hamster to home. I kept my hamster drugged. And I waited that Pump would get the better of sickness.Suddenly Pump groaned with pain again. Anything to took the pain away from my hamster. Just I could pray for my hamster. But the pray did not work well. My lovely pet died. I cried all day and I could not eat anything. People said Forget the hamster. And you buy any other hams ter. I did not agree their opinion. My pet pump is not the same other hamsters. We spent precious time had delightful memories. I was changed because of this happening. Frankly speaking I do not understand animal rights before I raise my pet. Now I think that animals also have valuable life as people. Sometimes, people think that people have power and strong than animals. So they ignore animal`s right and bully the weak animals. I think that this thought is very wrong. If I did not raised my pet, I do not think animal`s rights. Sometimes I think Pump. Until I miss Pump. Once in a while I think that I want to raise pet. Because there were just I and dog on the narrow path. So unconsciously I started to run. Then, a dog also started to chase me. I ran fast desperately, as fast as I could. But the dogs speed was very fast. So I was almost bitten by that dog. I barely get out dog by hiding in a neighbors house.     Also, Im scared of cats. Because cats have dreadful eyes. So I cant stare at cats for a long time. And cats are very fast. So cat suddenly appear and disappear in my sight. Besides, cat did not avoid human these days while cat in last days were scared of human and avoided us. When I see picture or TV scene of animal, I say, Oh, what a cute! That animal is very pretty. But if I really meet animal, I feel scary. And my best friend have a pet dog. That dogs name is BOM. BOM is little big but he is very cute. He wag his tail when my friend come back home. That behavior is lovely. So, sometimes I want to have a pet. Therefore I decided to have a pet, hedgehog. I thought that hedgehog is small, cute, pretty and charming. I collected many information about hedgehog like picture, food, lifespan and way to keep them. I eagerly anticipated hedgehog. But when I saw really hedgehog, I was sad. They were very cute and charming as expected. But I was scared of them. So I failed to have a hedgehog.   Second, I feel pity for animals. Especially, abandoned dogs in street and animals that living in zoo. People irresponsibly abandon their pets. So abandoned pets wander around street. They cant bath and eat any food. So they get dirty, have diseases and finally they die. And I feel pity for animals that living in zoo. When I was 10 years old, I went to the zoo for the first time. At that time, I was very excited and I think that animals were cute. But I went to the zoo in middle school student, I wasnt excited. Because animals of zoo have living in cage. So they cant have freedom. And they have hard training for visitor. I feel pity for them.   In 4 years ago, I went to the Thailand. In there, I rode a big elephant on back of elephant. And trainer rode on neck of elephant. Riding elephant was very exciting. But I saw the trainer have a hook and threatened to elephant for prevent people can hurt by elephant running fast or stand up. At that moment, I felt very sad and angry to trainer.   Still, Im scared of animals. But I think human and animals are partners that living together. So I want to try to get rid of my fear to animals. And I hope that trainer can realize their behavior like threatening to elephants is terrible. Little by little, the man loves the dog and communicates. After watching this program, I want to grow dog. I want to feel contact between human and pet. In fact, I dont have feeling about dog. But conclusively this program makes me change my viewpoint. I will write my viewpoints change for animals. When I was little girl, I liked animals. And I familiar with animals. Because my grandfather love animals. So my grandfather raised pets, chickens. I went to the grandfathers house, I played with animal. And my grandfather even raised dears. When my grandfather told about raising deer, my family opposed. But my grandfather was stubborn. Finally my family tired and allow that. Then I wanted to know why adult did not like raising deer. Because I was happy, when I listened my grandfather raise deer. Just, I was happy that I have new friend. This mind that I like animals continue to elementary school. Schizophrenia and the I-function: A Hypothesis Revised In my second web paper, I tried to come up with arguments supporting the hypothesis that schizophrenia was caused by an overactive I-function. Information about positive schizophrenic symptoms (distorted perceptions of reality, hallucinations, illusions, delusions, paranoia...)(2) suggested to me that the I-function of the schizophrenic was aware of things that the I-function of the non-schizophrenic wasn't. I also felt that because reality is such a biased, individual experience, non-schizophrenics do not have the right to label the reality of the schizophrenic as false. This hypothesis is flawed. After doing more research and taking into consideration a suggestion from Professor Grobstein that maybe the problem is not an overactive I-function, but abnormal input to the I-function, I have reworked the hypothesis. One can still validly say that the reality of the schizophrenic is real. However, it is more accurate to emphasize that the reality of a schizophrenic is only real to the schizophrenic, just as each and every person's individual reality is actually only real to him or her. The difference between the realities of schizophrenics and the realities of non-schizophrenics is that for non-schizophrenics, information is processed in a more or less uniform way. That is, I interpret input pretty much the same way most people around me would. There are, of course, discrepancies in interpretations even between non-schizophrenics, hence the difficulty in relying on eye-witness accounts. For schizophrenics, though, the interpretation of input is completely different from everyone e lse around them due to the fact that the input is in some way wildly changed between the time it reaches the afferent nerve endings to the time that it ends up at the I-function. I found that an excellent way to begin to understand how schizophrenia works is by reading personal accounts. This month has the opportunity to entice people learn about women from all races, ethnicities, and backgrounds, and encourage women to admire those who’ve made a difference. There are many Native American women who’ve fought and died for the rights of their tribe and sex, but she is by far one of my favorite ones.Through literature, music, and politics, she fought to change the thoughts and beliefs of White America so their views of Native American culture could be better ones. Name of Important Woman I chose to write about one of my favorite Native American authors and activists, Gertrude Simmons Bonnin. Zitkala Sa, which means Red Bird in the Lakota dialect, is a name she gave herself after she left the tribe and graduated from college (Giese 1996) so she is known by both nam es.She was born February 22, 1876 at the Yankton Sioux Reservation (Johnson and Wilson 1988:27) and she â€Å"died at 61 and was buried in Arlington Cemetery (due to her husband's service in World War I)† in 1938 (Hoefel 1999). Racial/Ethnic Background Gertrude Simmons Bonnin is considered a part of the Yankton Sioux Tribe. She was the mixed child of John Haysting Simmons, a man of Anglo-French decent (Johnson and Wilson 1988:27) and full blooded Yankton Sioux Indian Ellen Tate ‘I yohiwin â€Å"She Reaches for the Wind† Simmons (Henderson 1997). She dentified more with her Native American roots because of the traditional teachings her mother taught her. Her mother taught her the ways and language of the Yankton Sioux and even raised her in â€Å"a tipi on the Missouri River until she was 12† (Hoefel 1999). Justification Gertrude Simmons Bonnin/Zitkala-Sa is such an important woman because of her positive contributions to the Native American community. Bonn in not only was â€Å"one of the leading figures in the Pan-Indian movement† she â€Å"dedicated her life to improving the social and educational awareness of American Indians† (Johnson and Wilson 1988:27).She used her writing skills to fight for new legislation that favored Native Americans. Her involvement as editor of the American Indian Magazine, a quarterly magazine for the Indian Rights Association (SAI) helped to keep her people informed of any new legislation (Johnson and Wilson 1988:30). Life History It was at this age when Ellen Tate ‘Iyohiwin Simmons decided to send her daughter to the same boarding school she attended so Bonnin would have the â€Å"ability to fend for herself later in life among an increasing number of palefaces† (Hoefel 1999).The boarding school Gertrude Bonnin attended was run by Quaker Missionaries in Wabash, Indiana. The White’s Manual Labor Institute became Bonnin’s home for four years until she returned to t he reservation in South Dakota. Against her mother’s wishes, she decided to seek higher education by attending another school even further from home called the Santee Normal Training School in Nebraska. After graduating from that school, Bonnin went on to get several scholarships, degrees, and accolades from Earlham College in Indiana and Boston Conservatory of Music.After college, she retained a teaching job at the Carlisle Indian School. This school was founded by Richard Henry Pratt, an army officer with the mottoes â€Å"’From savagery to civilization’ and ‘We must kill the savage to save the man’† (Giese 1996). In addition to his mottoes, â€Å"Pratt abusively exploited the students for labor while at the same time receiving government funds for each student attending the school† (Henderson 1997). During the two years she taught at the school, she wrote about the punishments done to the students who didn’t conform.This is w hen she became known as Zitkala-Sa; writer and activist. She was criticized â€Å"because many felt she showed no gratitude for the kindness and support that the white people had given her in her education† (ibid. ). She married Captain Raymond Bonnin, who was a mixed Native American just like she was. Together they had a son and lived on the Ute Reservation in Utah for fourteen years. It was there she actively got involved in the movement for changes within the Native American community.Through her efforts, Bonnin gained an ally named Montezuma who â€Å"echoed [Bonnin’s] anti-BIA sentiments† and supported her fight to grant the Indians full citizenship rights so they could determine their own fate (Johnson and Wilson 1988:34). Contributions During her lifetime, Bonnin accomplished a lot in the name of her Native American heritage. In 1916, the Bonnin’s moved to Washington DC where she acted as secretary and editor of the American Indian Magazine. She fo ught to ban the use of peyote amongst her people.She â€Å"aired such controversial issues as enfranchisement, Indian military service in World War I, corruption in the BIA, and allotment of tribal lands† (Hoefel 1999). She has expressed her voice and political opinions through her various different writings: Oklahoma's Poor Rich Indians: An Orgy of Graft, Exploitation of the Five Civilized Tribes, Legalized Robbery (1924), American Indian Stories (1921), â€Å"Why I Am a Pagan† (1902), The School Days of an Indian Girl, and An Indian Teacher Among Indians.In addition to her numerous publishing’s about Native American life and her autobiographies, she also was a leader amongst her people. She and her husband founded the National Council of American Indians in 1926. Legacies She was the first and only president of the NCAI, where she â€Å"was the sole support of the organization, through speaking engagements to women’s groups† (Giese 1996) and whil e she was alive, its membership was made up of only Native Americans. Through her struggles and efforts, she helped â€Å"American Indians gained full citizenship in 1924,† (Johnson and Wilson 1988:38).She â€Å"fought for government reform, law codification, Bureau of Indian Affairs’ employment of Indians, Court of Claims’ redress of land settlements, and the preservation of the actual history of her people† as well as â€Å"assimilation, citizenship, and abolishing the BIA† (Hoefel 1999). Maryssa Buffano Miss Arnold Science – Current Astronomer Essay 4/12/2011 JMJ Dr. Debra Fischer – Astronomer An astronomer is an astrophysicist who studies stars, planets and galaxies. Astronomers use the laws of physics to investigate the matter and energy of celestial bodies. They then apply the research findings to solve space navigation and communication problems and even discover new planets and stars. In 1512, Copernicus theorized that the planets orbit the sun and the race to uncover new planets began.Historically, most of the famous astronomers have been men, such as Galilei Galileo and Johannes Kepler. Other men have made planet discoveries. For example, William Herschel uncovered Uranus, and Clyde Tombaugh found Pluto. Recently, there has been a new â€Å"man† on the planet hunting team, and she is a â€Å"woman†. Dr. Debra Fischer is a professor of astronomy at San Francisco State University. Her quest is to find planets orbiting around distant s tars. Debra Fischer completed her undergraduate work in science and physics at San Francisco State.Her search for planets began when she was a graduate student in astrophysics at the University of California, Santa Cruz. While there, she worked with astronomer Geoff Marcy. Marcy co-founded the California and Carnegie Planet Search Project with Paul Butler in 1983. The purpose of this planet hunting team was to discover extra-solar planets orbiting nearby stars. Swiss astronomers discovered the first extra-solar planet in 1995. Marcy’s team validated the existence of three more planets and a multi-planet system in 1996.Debra Fischer joined the project as a post-doctoral fellow managing the Lick Observatory in 1997. Through her work there, Fischer discovered more three planets herself by 1999. In order to unearth extra-solar planets, Fischer and her team at the Lick Observatory use a method known as the Doppler technique. By using an observation procedure that measures the meta l content of stars, a star’s velocity can be monitored. Fluctuations in the star’s velocity that signal the presence of the gravitational pull from an orbiting planet.Once a potential planet is identified, it is studied for a full orbital cycle. This process can take days or years depending on the planet’s distance from the star. Over 300 exoplanets have been confirmed using this methodology. Fischer is credited with over 200 of them. She brought the world’s first robotic telescope completely dedicated to finding new planets to the observatory in 2004. She still continues her work at the Lick Observatory today. Fischer’s work discovering of exoplanets has led a search to find earth like planets.She has been a strong force behind the Kepler space telescope. In 2009, NASA launched a spacecraft from Cape Canaveral to search the galaxy for planets that could possibly support life. After three years of orbiting, the Kepler telescope observations should provide a reliable number of earth-like planets that can be further studied. Fischer says the Kepler project, â€Å" will chart a course toward one day imaging a pale blue dot like our planet, orbiting another star. † Even if extra-terrestrial life is not found, its implications are profound.Is life common throughout the galaxy or is earth the only living planet? Debra Fischer is an amazing astronomer and woman. Her quest for knowledge never ends. Her latest efforts include detecting Hot Jupiters and Neptunes and writing computer programs modeling orbits and star velocity. Her pursuit of study continues today not only planet hunting, but also in educating others. Fischer teaches at several universities and travels as a guest lecturer. She encourages everyone she meets to reach for the stars.

Running Head: HISTORY OF MANAGEMENT THEORY History of Management Theory Troy Thompson 5409 Foxglove Drive, Bossier City, LA 71112 318-918-7413 [email  protected] com MSM 500 May 21, 2010 Class Instructor: Dr. David Bouvin Ellis University Introduction People and processes are the main elements under management purview, and it is interesting to learn how managerial philosophy pertaining to these two elements has evolved from the Industrial Revolution throughout the Progression Era and into the modern workplace. The purpose of this paper will focus on Frederick Taylor’s Scientific Management, also known as the Taylor System, and Elton Mayo’s Human Relations business models and how they relate to this managerial evolution. Both Taylor and Mayo were iconic masterminds who lit the torch of innovative management for America to progress out from days of uncontrolled process variation and unethical human treatment towards a new beginning of quality management and human respect in the workplace. The primary sources examined are Chapter 1 of Frederick Taylor’s The Principles of Scientific Management, and The Encylopedia of the History of American Management, Elton Mayo. Both sources will guide this paper in the direction of modern day relevancy. The Taylor System Before the Taylor System, factories during the Industrial Revolution concentrated on meeting the demand agriculture commerce from both home and abroad (Montagna, 1981). The focus was not necessarily on quality or the treatment of human labor (Montagna, 1981). Instead, the environment reflected heavy-and-go forms of process flow combined with poorly supervised labor. With his engineering mind and passion for efficiency, Taylor responded to these inadequacies and began his efforts of applying mathematics and engineering principles to eliminate unnecessary effort in operations. The Taylor System gave birth to the following management practices: Incentive-Driven work performances, Time-Motion Studies, Centralized Management, Task Specialization, and Quality Control (Taylor, 1911). All these adoptions gave rise to a new management school of thought centered around a more productive work place, which Taylor considered to be â€Å"maximum prosperity† (Taylor, 1911). Taylor firmly believed in developing â€Å"captains of industry† rather than waiting on natural-born leaders to come along (Taylor, 1911). He also recognized a need for more involvement from the supervisors in the workplace to help eliminate what he referred to as soldiering, or, laxed employee output. He said, â€Å"The 30 percent to 100 percent increase in wages which the workmen are able to earn beyond what they receive under the old type of management, coupled with the daily intimate shoulder to shoulder contact with the management, entirely removes all cause for soldiering† (Taylor, 1911). As the turn of the twentieth century neared, the progressive landscape begged for more efficient business practices (The Eleanor Roosevelt Papers, line 16). This was the optimal time for the principles by which operational capacity could be measured, analyzed, streamlined, and controlled to take hold. This system then became a cornerstone on beset of the Great Depression and followed by future management theorists from then on after. One criticism of Scientific Management is that it demanded top-performance in every worker and near perfect throughput on the production line, developing into a quasi authoritarian-style form of bureaucracy. Workers were afraid to out-produce one another on the basis of peer pressure (Taylor, 1911). Taylor’s system was based on good intention, but just lacked understanding of the human side to the workplace. This left room for the work of Elton Mayo to yield fruition. Elton Mayo (Human Relations) Elton Mayo became famous through the Western Electric Company research project. The initial purpose of the project was to find ways to improve worker productivity. He and his team looked at how lighting, rest breaks, room temperature, etc. ffected worker productivity (Mayo, 2006). Through his research, he found a distinct discovery knows as the â€Å"Hawthorne Effect†, which described an increase in output by workers who perceived that they are being watched and studied somehow (Mayo, 2006). Mayo viewed the Hawthorne Effect as a symptom of a bigger issue. He then diverted from his original hypothesis of physical factors to the examination the socio-political factors. What he found was that employees valued acceptance by their peers more than anything else (Mayo, 2006). Also unique about Mayo’s observations was the paradigm-burst that employees were not motivated primarily due to compensation, but were motivated primarily due to job satisfaction; this, of course, was a stark difference in Taylor’s theory that men were motivated best when they were given wages that were commensurate with their skill level. In support of Mayoism, as his principles later became known for, I applaud his principles of human relations that captured the essence of the Progressive Era in that they advanced employee respect in the workplace. Due to his influence, business leaders began to ask the question, what can be done to make our employees happier? New policies were adopted such as exit interviews, participative problem solving, and most novel of all – human relations (Mayo, 2006). Conclusion The essence of Taylor and Mayo’s legacies are of human ingenuity applied to enhance work settings, in terms of both people and processes. The best form of both elements can be seen in today’s business strategy of continuous process improvement, which is a group effort to optimize key processes in an organization. From Six Sigma, to Gantt Charts, to Brainstorming, to Exit Interviews, it is hard to imagine a work setting without the production techniques these two management gurus inspired. For example, the Air Force has embraced a culture of innovation called Air Force Smart Operations for the 21st Century (AFSO21). Through AFSO21, Airmen are encouraged to look at the way they do business and think of ways to make their areas more efficient, more safe, energy-saving, and effective. Many Fortune 500 companies have also incorporated continuous process improvement into their business mantra as a result of business management education guided by the wisdom of Taylor and Mayo. An Overview of the Life and Literary Works of Alfred Noyes Alfred Noyes was born in Wolver Hampton on 16th September 1880. In 1896, he went to Exeter College, Oxford, where he distinguished himself at rowing. His first volume of poems was The Loom of Years (1902). The Highwayman, Noyess best-loved poem, is included in the volume Forty Singing Seamen and other poems. The poem is about a highwayman and his lover Bess. The highwayman is deeply in love with Bess and goes to see her one night. Tim, the ostler was also in love with Bess and was jealous of the highwayman. He quietly listens to the conversation of bess and the highwayman .The highwayman was a felon and was wanted by the red coats. Tim informs the red coats about his next visit. To arrest the highwayman, the redcoats use Bess as bait. They position themselves everywhere in the neighborhood and in the inn. They tie Bess in front the window with a musket under her breast. At midnight she hears the highwayman coming closer and closer. To save him she pulls the trigger of the musket and kills herself. On hearing the shot of the musket, the highwayman flees away. The next day, when the highwayman gets to know about Bess he is furious and spurs on his horse to take revenge. But he is shot down. Even after years, it is said that on a night like that one, one can hear the highwayman on his horse coming to the inn-door, and one can see Bess at the window with her hair let loose waiting for the highwayman. The language of poetry is significantly different from the language of ordinary conversation because it is very often the language of indirection: it uses figures of speech like metaphors, similes, and symbols to get across the experience that the poet is trying to recreate. In the following paragraphs, I have analyzed the poem and stated a few of these figures of speech. Using the language of poetry, the poet creates a scene and makes the reader imagine his thoughts. In the first verse of his poem, Alfred Noyes, metaphorically describes: the wind to a river, which is flowing through the mountain like trees: the moon to a ship, which floats in a sea of clouds: the road to ribbon, twisting and turning, shining in moonlight, and passing through a marshy piece of land. In the same verse, the poet introduces the highwayman riding a long distance on his horse before arriving to the inn-door. This can be noticed and the poet puns on the word riding and repeats the word over and over again. Another example of the same style of poetry can be seen in the seventh verse, where the red coats arrive to the landlords inn. In this example the pun is on the word marching. In the second and the third verse the poet describes the highwayman and Bess. The highwayman is dressed in rich attire and when he arrives Bess is waiting for him there. The lovers are parted apart, as the landlord doesnt want Bess to meet the Highwayman. This is because in verse, the highwayman is a wanted convict by the red coats. The poet also introduces Tim who takes of the horses and is also in love with Bess, and is jealous of the highwayman. Unlike the highwayman, the poet presents Tim in a very rustic manner.
